ESSAY OF LANGUAGE LEARNING

Essay of Learning language.
Lyons (1981:6) point out that “most of them have taken the view of language are systems of symbol designed, as it were, for the purpose of communication. English is presented as foreign language in Indonesia, so it should be learned. (Maghvirah et al, 2012) language learning is hoped that can help the students to know his/her self, their culture and the other culture. It means that the students can know the other culture when they know the other language. English as foreign language, the students have difficulties to learn the language.
Base on interviewer some students that learned English, they have difficulties in learning English. They have no concept in English, moreover, there are four skills in English that should be master; they are speaking, reading, writing, and listening. Some of students said that one of the difficulties in English is the written form is different with the pronunciation itself. So they always open dictionary when they want to speak each other.
Because learning language is difficult, it is needed some strategy in learning language. ones of them is Oxford's (1990) Classification of Language Learning Strategies. Oxford (1990:9) sees the aim of language learning strategies as being oriented towards the development of communicative competence. Oxford divides language learning strategies into two main classes, direct and indirect, which are further subdivided into 6 groups. In Oxford's system, metacognitive strategies help learners to regulate their learning. Affective strategies are concerned with the learner's emotional requirements such as confidence, while social strategies lead to increased interaction with the target language. Cognitive strategies are the mental strategies learners use to make sense of their learning, memory strategies are those used for storage of information, and compensation strategies help learners to overcome knowledge gaps to continue the communication. So, communicative competence is one of strategy in learning English that is affective strategy. We do not only learn the language, but we also learned how to be self confidence when communicate each other.
